An Encounter with the History of Black Masons

A while ago there was a Facebook discussion about the shortage of Blacks in Masonic as ell as Thelemic Lodges. i wondered how this might be. I had this to say at the time.

I did not mince words in my intial post when I said:

"What bothers me most about the Magickal tradition of Thelema and the rest of the Hermetic tradition, is the shortage of Blacks. Considering all the artifacts, books and intellectual property from Africa that they use. Considering that the Aleister Crowleys ape Egyptian gods. I find it hard to feel included when the same people spouting ancient African knowledge are all White and the Lodges I see have never had an African leader. I am distant, at this time, from the Hermetic tradition. I have been more focused on Africa, because this is what they want. They've always wanted Africa. They tried to disturb us and steal it all. But this knowledge, the artefacts and the land. It is ours. No matter what them skylark say."

Now don't let them hoodwink you with their selective history telling. The Black has been leading the Masonic Order for hundreds of years before Europeans attacked Africa to destabilise the rise of Black Empire.

I've been reading the histories of Masonic Lodges in the USA and it's insane how the courts would let the Black lodgers buy land, and then "legally" take it by launching ridiculously expensive charges at them. The lodges in the States were all White, until about 1843 when the Grand Order of United Odd Fellows of America started.

Even before that, the Moorish Grand Magi were Black. And I don't think Europe like it at all. Notice that historically, at about 1490, Africa was still autonomous, building institutions of learning and inquiry.

Now it is easy to claim that these Africans stole from the Europe they visited, but any Historian will look further and further back and soon see, Africans and Europeans were not always opponents. Our history is more convoluted and gray than it is black or white. There were points of history where the African wise men were the ones leading the course/cause of enlightenment in a Europe that desperately needed it.

Considering the sheer act of war that African Slavery is, it is surprising to see the Masonic and other mystery school traditions being carried by the thief and warlord.

I will leave you with some pictures to give you some perspective. There are some really interesting stories about the mid 1800s in the USA, but there is a lot of information, and only so much attention.

By the by, a clipping from a 1921 Missouri newspaper was what started me off on this mission again.

Here's a look. Find it if you can.
