The Lily Mine Inquiry begins.

Dear Activists and Civil Society,

We need your help.

The Lily Mine Disaster Inquiry starts on Monday and our team needs to be there. This is the appeal letter, we will send Amandla.mobi link to it later. Can you help us mobilise resources and/or ask others to do the same please?

Lily Mine families need justice
Help us get to Mine Inquiry
Inquiry starts 27 February

Our thoughts are with the families of Lily Mine workers. This Monday 27th February marks the beginning of an inquiry into the cause of the horrific collapse that left Pretty Nkambule, Solomon Nyerende and Yvonne Mnisi trapped underground at Lily Mine, for over a year. The inquiry into the cause of the avoidable collapse is set to last about 3 weeks; but it is widely expected to ensure truth, justice, and due compensation for the families, and all affected.

The announcement of our Department of Mineral Resource’s inquiry comes after months of campaigning by mine workers, unions, civil society, and the amandla.mobi community. Despite that, no local mining expert committed to the cause of justice is prepared to testify. This is because mining and gold are mainly owned and controlled by megacorps like Anglo American, Bank of New York, and others. [Source: McGregor’s Who Owns Whom]. An engineer who testifies against Vantage Goldfields Lily Mine may be kicked out of employment. This is why our friends at Stand UP! Foundation are taking initiative to appoint an independent expert.

Workers’ struggles are part of our common struggle. Stand UP!’s lead in ensuring our participation in the Inquiry - through local mining researcher and activist Shaheed Mahomed, and through a film documentary by activist and journalist Shabnam Palesa Mohamed - show commitment to justice. But this is a costly exercise – R400 000 to be exact. Stand UP! is urgently raising resources for fullest participation in the Inquiry. It needs all of us to contribute in cash or kind to make it happen.

The amandla .mobi community has a beautiful history of coming together in times of need. In the past we supported Fees Must Fall activists, among other causes. We encourage our members to make a direct donation to Stand UP! - to shine a bright light on what really happened at Lily Mine - and ensure the souls of Pretty Nkambule, Solomon Nyerende and Yvonne Mnisi find answers, justice and peace. “Silence is betrayal, silence is consent.” Dr Martin Luther King Jnr.

Please share this update to mobilise support. Please also support the call for the inquiry to be open to public, and for it to be televised live to ensure justice is always transparent.
