Commons Student Initiative [CSI] of UKZN
Official Statement - Press and Public Release
The Commons Student Initiative (henceforth referred to as The CSI) is a movement launched by students of the University of KwaZulu-Natal Howard College campus Wednesday 21 October 2015. The CSI consists of students with a common goal: To fight against the exorbitant fees students are subjected to but cannot afford to pay, and injustices connected thereto. Therefore, we formally reject and denounce any association or involvement with the Student Representative Council (hereinafter referred to as the SRC) of UKZN. In terminating the representation and mandate of the SRC, we make public knowledge that we were not consulted with regards to a university management court interdict preventing students from the constitutional right to gather - which was signed in bad faith by the SRC on 26 October 2015 - without the knowledge, consensus and approval of the student body. We also make public knowledge that acts of intimidation, kidnapping, and terror were perpetrated against peaceful students by a company called M17, masquerading as security for UKZN management. We would like to meet with the greater student body of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in order to discuss the best way forward as the students of UKZN, but this interdict prevents any gathering of students from taking place. We as The CSI have taken a decision to challenge the court interdict legally and will also make alternative arrangements to meet. Finally, we remind the public and media that the CSI is not and will never be affiliated with any political organisation. We thank you for your continued support.
