Rhodes and the falling: Not in my own words

  • Ashley JewnarainAll of you entitled racist humans preaching Mandela's dream and Rainbow Nation rhetoric, I want to say look around you, and actually ask yourself, in all honesty, If you really don't see the injustice, alienation, disenfranchisement and oppression that is going on around you, and that is really just the fresh scab on top of the deep historic wounds of tyranny and genocide gouged into the fabric of this nation. To empathize with people who are tired of dismissive doublespeak and being surrounded by symbols of this dark history. But I'm afraid that is beyond your perception, you clearly feel entitled to the privilege you get to enjoy everyday. You're all drunk on an arrogant subconscious fallacy that your ways are superior. Rhodes must fall. As a symbol he aggrandizes the powers that stole this land from It's people and forced them to live in persecution and squalor. And please, if only for the wellbeing of your souls even, you have to fucking get that. Your ancestors came here and raped this place. And no you don't get some free claim to civilized superiority. You were a bunch of so called "heathen" tribes before the Romans forced this brutish imperialist structure you call a civilization on you. Rhodes must fall. And maybe even Queen Victoria outside Parliament, why do we have to look at her face everyday? does that sovereignty still define us? And everyone who asks "what then?" ...well, then we should probably get on to the decades old laundry list of social and structural inequalities and injustices that plague this land...But as a young person growing up in a climate of arrogance, apathy and entitlement, something as decisive and concrete as this, a united confrontation of the symbols of oppression embedded in our common landscape, a drive to affect changes in that landscape, a mobilized radicalization of our fellow youth, this is important to us, this is a the beginning of something greater. Anyone who thinks this is trivial and cosmetic, that it's just about a fucking statue, well your head's buried in the ground, and you lack conscious empathy for this country and It's people. Anyone who thinks I'm stupid and uneducated for seeing it this way, bring it on, your ignorance and hate is telling. RHODES MUST FALL

  • Sophie Field I'm honestly saddended by these racist people and their disgusting, backward beliefs. I hope you people are some day able to understand that the issues of this country's past will always be relevant and struggled against, and that the people who wish for the statue to be removed have every right do feel that way. I'm a white student at UCT and, because I (and many other people who, unlike the pathetic racists on this comment board) believe in real, tangible equality in this country, am not threatened by this logical and necessary need for change. Gavin McCarthy, whoever you are, you are disgusting. How dare you use those kinds of words. It's time for people like you to wake up and realize that the time of those kinds of beliefs being ok in this country are over.

  • Devan Pillay What I like about this campaign is that it has flushed out all those creepy racists who previously hid behind the "rainbow nation" and posed as "liberals".....

Now we can have a REAL conversation about the persistence of white supremacy and what we need to do to moved towards a true non racial future - based on social equality, not continued white privilege (with a dollop of black elites)

  • Basil L. Behrman As a UCT Alumni I am utterly disgusted that the current students have lowered their self esteem to deface a historical monument and illustrate to the outside world that our pristeen University is slipping down in quality and sensitivity and also proving that the New South Africa has not kept their side of the deal of President Mandelas dream. No sane and educated individuals will be motivated to venture near to this behavior or be subjected to it! I am so disappointed and disgusted that words fail me! Thank God I am no longer living in the hell that is to come there as this behavior continues unabated. The Third World is not approaching our beautiful country. It is already here.

But with the mentality of the brain dead idiots trying to study one can expect this kind of behaviour. They have the mentality of a locus....come in f%$#@ up and move to another place! But no, with the statue gone they will have one brain cell more and they will be more clever! Dum f#$@!!!!!

  • Frank Weitsz This behaviour is typical of an uneducated bunch of people who got something from history that made the country and gave them the University they studying at. They never wood have had something, looking at government, a bunch of uneducated people, almost where you are now, history and twenty years of their leadership, yet you want to take it down. Now you want to convince me you/the country is going forward!!!
