Ashley Jewnarain Tells Stories

The creator, Wele Xakaba, made the entire world,
and as his abode, the realms of heaven. To prevent heaven from falling in, he supported it with pillars, as one would support the roof of a round house. Having created heaven by himself, he created two servants to oversee his creation, Wele Muxove and Wele Nurumwa. Then they made the moon and the sun...

In the beginning, the moon was larger and more luminous than his little brother, the sun. They fought over this constantly, until finally, Wele Xakaba had to separate them, deeming that henceforth, the sun would be brighter than the moonthis, he declared, would be the daywhen the moon shined, he called it nightThe creator then made clouds and dispersed them in the sky, where he unleashed a gigantic roosterwhen it shook it's wings, lightning arced out across the sky, and when it crowed, thunder rolled over all
creationHe then created stars to assist the sun in the moon in managing the heavenshe made rain, and placed within the clouds, from which it fell endlesslyto stop the rain from falling when it was not needed, Wele Xakaba made two rainbows, a male and a femalethe male cannot stop the rain by himself, as he is very narrow and requires the wider female , for together they can do soto stop the rain, the male rainbow appears first and the female comes afterthis whole process, the creation of heaven and all of the things in it, took the creator two days, and when he was complete, he realized he could not find his servants within so vast a workafter finding them, he realized he needed a place where they and all the other things he had made could do their work, so he made the earthmysteriously, shaping valleys and raising mountains and all sorts of terrain and vistasAs the sun rose up on the first day on the earth, the creator beheld his resplendence and wondered :"for whom shall my sun shine?"he then created the first human, a man they say, named Mwambubut Mwambu was made so he could talk and see, so Wele Xakaba made Sela, to be Mwambu's sacred partner, the first womanHe then filled the earth with plants and all sorts of creatures, that the humans would live in an abundant and vital placeMwambu and Sela built their home in a place called Embayitheir house stood in the air, supported by tall pillarswhenever they would roam the earth they would do so by a long ladder, which they would pull back into their house when they returned, as there were strange and dark monsters that also roamed those lands in the old days...
